Review: Casio Tough Solar Watch perfect for active outdoorsmen

If you’re looking for a solar-powered sports watch in the $50 dollar range, the Casio Tough Solar Watch is one of the best products out there. Though not as popular as Casio’s G-Shock line, the Tough Solar watches check many boxes including analog-digital faces, stopwatch, timer, time zones, and alarms.

ITEM REVIEWED: CASIO TOUGH SOLAR WATCH | AMAZON Price: $33-$40.00

Short story: I recommend this watch for campers, hikers, and outdoorsman. It’s durable, lightweight, and doesn’t have a battery to replace. The only negative I’ve found is the alarm sound is not loud enough. — Buy at Amazon

I own two versions of this line. The first one lasted almost four years before a plastic part of the band became too lose and started falling off. It’s survived many camping trips and offroad adventures. I originally purchased the watch for $34 and the replacement part was $15. I decided to try out a different variant of the Tough Solar series and picked up the Casio AQS810W-1A2V Tough Solar Analog Watch. Glad I did!

Design & Functions

This bad boy looks sharp in all situations. It’s black with grey accents and numbers. The backlight glows orange against the digital screen, allowing you to see the time and access functions. You can set 5 alarms, stopwatch, timer, multiple cities for secondary time, hourly beep, 12/24hr time, DST, and more. The band is made of resin and so far hasn’t failed me. Here’s a quick list of features from the manufacturer:

  • Solar-powered ana-digi watch featuring exposed screws on case and patterned dial with LED light
  • Features dual countdown timers with auto-repeat, 1/100-second stopwatch, five daily alarms, full auto calendar, world time, multi-lingual day-of-week display, and 12/24-hour formats
  • 52.2 mm resin case with mineral dial window
  • Quartz movement with analog-digital display
  • Resin band with buckle closure
  • Water resistant to 100 m (330 ft)

Durability

You can really bang these around without worrying about a breakage. Perhaps the only issue I’ve seen (on a different Tough Solar model) is the screen scratches easily. At work I’m not easy on anything — I work in an industrial environment outdoors. At home, at the campsite, on hikes, this bad boy rarely comes off. I like reviewing products that I use daily and this Casio Tough Solar watch is one of them. And the best part? If something goes wrong — It was only $40 bucks.
