Is the Gazelle Hub Tent the best tent for camping?

Mike N' S'mores12 months ago4 months ago33 mins

I recently introduced friends and cousins to camping and they often ask me: What’s the best tent for camping? Product Link: Best Price at Amazon Well, you can spend $500-600 dollars and get a big overpriced tent and you have to fumble with poles. You can get a $50-200 dollar tent that’s smaller, but also…

SOG Traction Pocket Knife Review: Best EDC Knife?

Mike N' S'mores1 year ago4 months ago01 mins

In the never-ending hunt for the perfect everyday carry knife the SOG Traction Pocket Knife checks off many boxes. Lightweight. Thin. Discreet. Durable. And I prefer my every day carry (EDC) knife to be under $50. Product Link: Amazon.com or sogknives.com

A word on overlanding with a ground tent — NOT with rooftop tent (RTT)

Mike N' S'mores1 year ago1 month ago07 mins

I was recently listening to a podcast called The Average Overlanders and the guests mentioned how they tried the rooftop tent experience and eventually moved away from it. It got me thinking… why haven’t I tried the RTT overlanding experience with my Toyota Tacoma? Of course, it has to do with me having a truck…

Photo Report: The Slot hike in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Mike N' S'mores1 year ago1 year ago03 mins

Hiking “The Slot” in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park was probably one of my favorite nature walks of all time. I say that because it’s not a very strenuous hike, more like an adventurous walk through a nature park. Walking through this siltstone canyon makes it feel like you’re walking in a scene of Star Wars…

Mike N' S'mores2 years ago2 years ago012 mins

Vising the Pacific Northwest has always been on my bucket list and we finally got a taste of what this beautiful area has to offer. A few of the highlights were Deception Pass, hiking Mt. Erie, Heart Lake, and visiting the quaint waterfront of La Conner. There is plenty of hiking and exploring to be…

Testing the Jackery power station and 60-watt solar panels with a portable fridge

Mike N' S'mores2 years ago2 years ago39 mins

I am doing some controlled backyard testing of the Jackery SolarSaga 60-watt solar panel paired with Jackery’s entry-level Explorer 160 model power station. Our Kalamera Portable Fridge has become a staple in our camping gear box for extended trips and we’d love to be able to keep it powered by the sun. Keeping a portable…

Stuck in the sand: 2wd off-road truck experience

Mike N' S'mores2 years ago5 months ago06 mins

Looking back on my recent trip to the desert and how we got stuck in the sand, I’m reluctant to blame the truck and the fact that it’s a 2wd. We could have also gotten stuck in the deep sand with a 4×4. Taking a 2wd off-road is always a risk, but it’s how you…

My Jackery 160 portable power station has been a staple in my camping gear for the past few years. A hidden gem we found when cruising around June Lake this summer. What a cool story!
Little slice of paradise
Sometimes you don't have to go far... Flowers at our local hike are popping off right now! Oh, and we saw a snake!

When we found the Palm oasis in Anza-Borrego
Day 2 in Anza-Borrego... we started the hike around 8am and it was beautiful. Cool, yet windy and a little overcast. We finished around 11am since 3 miles with a 7-year old birthday girl is slow-going. But she did great and had a blast climbing rocks and traversing the stream. So much color in the flowers and hills. We were searching for bighorn sheep, but couldn't find any. I know they were hiding somewhere. Finished the day with Burgers and Shakes at @big_horn_burgers highly recommended. This was last week and I've read that the blooms are already gone mostly because of the warmer weather and wind this weekend. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has become one of my favorite places to explore. And I've only scratched the surface. Can't wait to get back out there! @anzaborregodesertsp @anzaborrego
